Making the decision to further your education is the best decision you can make. These days it’s not enough to have your primary education. You need far more than that. So going back to school could be the most rewarding decision you could make for your future. However, if you are on the fence about it there might be some points to sway you.

First, the idea of going back to school should be embraced. It’s a chance for you to be connected to your future and to do the kinds of things that you love. You are able to get specific and specialized training in the area that really excites you. It’s one of the things that makes it so rewarding.

Many people worry about the cost of school and they should because it’s not always cheap, but with the advent of online classes, going back to school is both easy and affordable. These days you can go to an online school that isn’t paying for the overhead of a traditional university. It’s something that really makes a difference in the price.

Because so much secondary education is online it is allowing people to be able to do their schooling remotely. This makes it easy for the adult with a full-time job and or a family to get their education without ever having to put their life on hold.

If you want to go back to school you should. These days there is less and less reason to say no.

A traditional path to higher education would have a high school senior applying to several first pick and second pick campuses. If all goes according to plan, they’ll be accepted to their school of choice and head off to four more years of learning. However, sometimes life has a funny way of pulling the rug out on the best of college plans. Sometimes the first and second choices aren’t available. There could also be a challenge with tuition and living costs that can upend a journey to the university. Just because these factors crop up doesn’t mean you need to bring your higher education dreams to a halt. You can take an online path as your regroup.

Online education is the modern equivalent to the old correspondence courses. The goal of an online learning program is to let you earn a valuable degree within the framework of a flexible schedule and affordable cost. Most of those very same colleges you applied to will be offering distance learning as part of their curriculum. As you dedicated a semester to online learning, you can also continue working at a job to save up for an ultimate transfer to the campus of your choice. Those online credits should be able to fold right into your traditional college degree program.

Another benefit of online learning is allowing you to explore different career paths without committing to a specific program. You don’t have to declare a major right away. Instead, you can enroll in courses that interest you in the hopes of finding your passion, but without the heavy tuition costs of a normal college.

Going onward with your education is an admirable goal, but sometimes you need to go away to do it properly. After all, it’s far too easy to get lost in the inertia of familiar faces and familiar places. Sometimes going to a large city like Atlanta is a great way to focus on furthering your education and moving up in the world.

When you first check out some Atlanta apartments, you are going to notice that living in a big city like that is a far different experience than living in a suburban or rural area. For one thing, the culture is very tilted toward the support of others within the community, which is a strange concept to people who live very self-sufficient lives out in the sticks. Cities are all about interdependence. For another thing, you will notice that the arts have a powerful influence on the area. Remember that beautifying a space is as much a functional activity as improving your skills and expanding your horizons. When you’re in a new place, especially one that’s as large as Atlanta, you have to respect other people’s opinions.

Your education is not just going to happen in the classroom. Most of the time, going off to school teaches you all kinds of things about the world that just can’t seem to fit inside of a textbook or an instructor’s lesson plan. As often as not, you are going to find that if you ever go back to the place you came from, it just won’t seem as vibrant or large. When they say you can never go home again, they mean it emotionally more than physically.

Some people say that wherever you go, that’s where you are. With this cryptic quote as your guide, it’s no wonder you can take your educational experience with you to any corner of the globe. You can even go to school from the comfort of your own local coffee shop. All you need is a laptop with wifi capabilities, and you’re in. Caffeine expenses notwithstanding, it’s even reasonably inexpensive.

Being educated means more than just having a fancy piece of sheepskin paper to hang on your wall. For a lot of people, it also means that you’ve grown beyond where you were before. If you spend your entire life in a small town and rarely meet anyone new or different, you won’t be as socially educated as you would be in a major metropolitan area. However, the people you can meet online are all but infinite, as well as infinitely varied. With this in mind, online education allows you to combine the best parts of small town life with the unbelievable amount of learning you can do when you’re online and guided by trained professionals.

Imagine being able to sit in a coffee house and sip your brew of choice while you pay little to no rent, because you aren’t living on campus. This is a pretty nice life in itself, but it gets even better when you realize that you can also be taking in an entire education, and even earning an advanced degree in a lucrative field while you live this kind of life. No matter where you want to get your education, you can do it. From there, you can go far.

Taking classes while gainfully employed is not just a way to get continuing education units (CEUs) needed to maintain licensure in some fields (i.e., nursing), continuing education can help you keep your job and even get a better one. Working at a full time job and juggling family and school can be daunting. The following are tips for making your three-ring circus work.

Take online classes—many courses are offered through accredited schools online, such as Kaplan University, DeVry University or University of Phoenix. Online courses offer the flexibility of working at your own pace, on your own schedule.

Schedule carefully—many brick-and-mortar universities now offer weekend and evening programs for people who work. When scheduling, limit the number of classes you take so you have time for your family and your job.

Time management—block out time on your schedule to review coursework and do homework. Leave the house and go to the library or a coffee shop (like you did in college) if you need to.

Tell your employer what you are up to—you might be eligible for tuition reimbursement and letting your boss know you are improving your credentials can help you get a bigger pay increase.

Get a study partner—it pays to have someone to call up if you miss a class and to study with when working on difficult material.

Keep your family involved—while it may seem easier to go it alone, having the support of your family can make it easier to get study time and reduce your stress level.

Getting admitted to an online college is much the same as admissions for a traditional college. Just like admissions to brick-and-mortar schools, applicants must complete applications, submit test scores in some cases and pay application fees. The course curriculum is also basically the same for the both. However, once you’ve been accepted, attending class is a little different.

Online degrees can be self-paced which means you are able to start it at any time, or they can be structured so that students are scheduled to begin classes in groups and then they go through their programs at the same pace. In the latter case, there is usually a specific start date.

In addition to finding out when each course begins, it may be able to take individual courses at an accelerated pace. Although a student might have an entire semester to complete an online course, it is sometimes possible to complete a course early, depending upon the speed at which you work.

Although computers are the status quo for most degree-seeking students, regular access to a computer with Internet access and email is absolutely necessary when attending a virtual school. In addition, different online schools may have different technical requirements so it is important to check these out as well. For example, find out the time of browser you will need, how fast your Internet connection should be and whether or not you need specific software like Microsoft Office or something else that might be required for a certain class.

Going to school online, especially as an adult working full time, is a very different experience than doing it right out of high school full time. Although you won’t have the diversions of fraternity parties or road trips, work and family can offer up a whole host of new distractions. Knowing what you are getting into and what you can expect can help you make your education a success.

Tips for a Successful Education

Get familiar with the educational resources your school offers as well as the software necessary for class. Online schools typically offer online tutorials and even a basic introductory class to help ease the process.

Don’t forget to take notes. Notes help in all kinds of classroom situations but are especially useful when learning new vocabulary, procedures and concepts.

Don’t just sit there and take up virtual space! It is important to participate in your class and interact with your instructor and classmates in order to take full advantage of all your education has to offer. And when you participate, share your thoughts and opinions. Because of the nature of distance learning, many of the pressures associated with socializing are minimizing. Your classmates and teacher will get to know you through your thoughts and contributions to the class.

Because the course is online, you also have the ability to think before you act. Online instruction gives students time to really think about what they have learned before sharing it with others. The same goes for your classmates. This experience allows you time to learn from your peers as well.

The University of Phoenix has made a big name for itself as one of the go-to online universities. As a for-profit school, most people think of it as one focused on career, vocational or technology training, backed by investors and run like a business.

Non-profit universities like the University of Michigan or the University of California are typically four-year educational institutions which means bachelor’s degrees are conferred in four years.

Beyond these basics, do they really differ? Many students find the for-profit model beneficial. Because these universities follow a business model, students are often treated as customers ,so the colleges are often quicker to respond to a student’s needs. In addition, the colleges tend to be competitive across the market as a whole, including for-profit and non-profit universities alike, so they are quicker to improve and innovate than non-profits.

One competitive advantage for-profit schools offer is their flexible learning environments. Because many of them have campuses across the country in addition to online programs, students can function at their own pace in their own space.

In order to ensure that a degree or certificate earned from a for-profit school is all that you hope it is cracked up to be, make sure that the program you select is accredited. If it isn’t regionally or nationally accredited, your degree won’t be considered legitimate. Accreditation is the way in which the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) determines whether school meet the current standards of professionalism and education. This accreditation is what really guarantees that you get what you pay for at both for-profit and non-profit institutions.

The first day of class in a virtual classroom is very different than the first day of class in a bricks-and-mortar classroom. When you saunter into a physical classroom, you can easily strike up a conversation with the student sitting next to you. Not so in an online class. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able interact with your classmates or your teacher.

Online courses are frequently hosted on secure websites. In this construct, the professor can post lectures and assignments to the site for students to access. There is usually a method for students to post queries and comments, either via a bulletin board or some other discussion forum. In many virtual classrooms, instructors will often set up specific times for students to log in for chat sessions. Communication in the online classroom usually takes places by one if not all of the following: email, instant messaging, streaming video and/or video conferencing.

Although these multiple communication forms can seem daunting if you are new to the world of virtual school, do not despair. Online colleges typically have excellent technical support available to students.

In addition to receiving your lectures online, you will be turning in your assignments via email, often in Microsoft Word, if not Excel or PowerPoint. Students also use email to correspond with professors, classmates and groups within a class.

Because not all students may be present online at the same time, blackboard chat sessions are often recorded and archived. A chat session or discussion board allows members to message back and forth as part of a topic thread. Colloquiums are often offered to augment the virtual classroom. A colloquium is a seminar often led by different instructors on different topics an each meeting.

One thing that won’t be any different from a regular classroom, you can still expect to buy textbooks.

Going to school online sounds good; who wouldn’t want to go to school without getting out of bed? But many people wrongly assume attending college online isn’t for them because of expense or level of difficulty.

Taking courses online is not any more expensive than taking classes at your local college. In fact, many local colleges now offer courses online as well as in the classroom. The prices for online courses do vary greatly just like classroom courses. Credit hours typically range from $100 to $300 and there are usually additional fees as well. However, when you go to school online, your car stays in the garage so you don’t have to pay for gas or parking.

Online colleges also offer scholarships and financial aid just like brick-and-mortar schools. It is important to check whether the degree being offered is accredited because programs that are not may not be eligible for certain federal financial aid programs.

The difficulty of online college courses isn’t any different than traditional colleges because they basically follow the same curriculum, even if the material is delivered in a different format. The upside is that because you are taking classes online, you can frequently “attend” the class when you want to. So if you aren’t a morning person, you don’t have to go to classes before you get your morning coffee. Also, an instructor’s lectures can be gotten in written form, a plus if you are a lousy note taker.

Another myth about online programs is that you can’t get credit for work experience. Just like traditional programs, many schools offer the option of taking proficiency exams, such as the College Level Examination Program and the Proficiency Examination Program, instead of coursework.

Returning to school as an adult or later in life can be a challenge that is both intimidating and frustrating. For many people returning, they have already established their careers and have made a good living until something forced them to make a change. For some they are looking for career advancement and are looking to make more money before retirement. Others simply want to change careers and they need more education to do so. Regardless of the reasons, many adults find that navigating the college market is not like it was a decade ago. They find that they need help getting to the right points in order to begin the process.

There are services that are exclusive to adults that are returning to schools, and many will assist in helping these students find the proper forms, services, and places to be in order to begin their adventure down the educational brick road. For adults that are looking for online programs that fit into their schedule they are in luck. Most of the online programs are geared for people that are over the age of 25, have had a job or career, and potentially a family, and they need something that will fit into their lives. This is much different than those that are simply indecisive, in which case online learning can still be a valuable tool while you are trying to decide what to do.

Some of the things that adult learners may be shocked to find out is that their old college credits may no longer be valid for their new program of study. College credits are only good for up to ten years. After that a student will have to consider retaking many of the older classes, and in some cases they will be required to start completely over.

Just when you didn’t think there could be anything better than high school, along comes college. Welcome to the next chapter in your life. If you’re headed off to a four year campus, you’re in for a world of great new experiences that will set you up for the rest of your life. First of all, embrace why you are there: to earn a degree. It’s quite possible the plan you start out with in your freshman year is going to be drastically different than in your senior year. That’s not a problem. In fact, it is encouraged. As you navigate through your course work you’ll discover all kinds of facets about your major and chosen career path. There is nothing wrong with making course corrections. Just keep your eye on the prize.

One of the benefits of heading off to college is the sense that you are hunkering down for the next four years. This is going to be your home away from home. You’ll become very familiar with the campus layout in no time. You should also familiarize yourself with your professors. They all have open office hours. This time is for you to check in on how you’re doing and find ways to improve. Forging these kinds of relationships early on can make a world of difference down the line. Earnmydegree.com has plenty of helpful first year tips.

Is there anything else that makes college the best of times? Of course that would be all the fun you’re about to have. We all know you didn’t enroll in your campus of choice because it was ranked as a top ten party school, right? As long as you keep up your course work and go to class (either in a big hall or online environment), there is no reason why you can’t dive into the collegiate activity scene. Could there be a Facebook project in your future?

Online education is a great way to gain your degree without ever having to leave your home. This type of education is the wave of the present and the future, and many brick and mortar schools are recognizing this trend. In fact, many of these schools are beginning to embrace the wave and have begun to setup programs that allow students to attend their high end university on an online dime. This is a great benefit for those that are finding that the economy has made their employment hopes somewhat of a dismal mess. Online education offers an out for many people so that they can continue on living their lives and providing for the families while still working on their goals of moving up in the work force.

Online education also provides an out for many people that are not looking for, or do not enjoy, being in a large crowd or feel the need to be in a classroom for hours on end. The class structure for online classes tends to follow a self paced regimen and many people really thrive in this type of environment. In fact, the completion rate for many of these students is so high, that many of the traditional colleges are taking a hard look at their programs and considering making wholesale changes that would incorporate a competency based element to many of the classes. This is partly with CLEP testing is so popular with the schools. Online education also offers unique way of handling course materials and reading materials. Most of the information needed for a class can be located online and is usually free of charge, or part of the online library. For many students, the cost effectiveness of an online program is the catch, and the fact that the education provided is top notch quality makes the deal even sweeter. Many are also attracted to the amazing assortment of degrees opportunities that are available.

Most Americans have heard of a catch-22. Originally, that term meant that a person who was crazy enough to do something willingly would be too crazy to have to do it, while a person who had issues with doing the same thing would end up being forced into it. That is both sad and ironic, to put it mildly. But nowadays, anything that presents a “hexed if you don’t, cursed if you do” situation gets called a catch-22. Education is pretty much the epitome of the catch-22 phenomenon in this country. After all, we know that public education is not so well funded.

This system means that parents end up needing to be extremely well educated, so that they can get the great jobs that are necessary to finance things like private school educations. In some cases, even a master’s degree is necessary, in a field like business. But just like with a lot of public school educations, even colleges can sometimes skimp on the educational quality they provide for their students. School is supposed to prepare us for our lives and careers, so that we can do well for ourselves and our families. But it seems like you need an SAT test and GMAT class online just to compete at the “average” level.

There are an awful lot of people who have a hunger to succeed. It is for this reason that it is so importance of education in the modern world. We are not only competing with our town or our city or another state; we are competing against the world. The bar has been raised and it isn’t stopping anytime soon.

There are many professions in today’s workforce marketplace. Most have very specific educational requirements, and one of the professions with the most requirements, and the strictest, is teaching. Teachers are required to have a lot of education, and because teachers are enforcing Federal educational guidelines, and these guidelines change often, teachers are required to keep their education up to date. They are required to continually take course work, and then prove their mastery by taking state and federal testing in order to remain highly qualified. Highly qualified status means that a teacher is not only able to prove that they took classes, but can also prove competency. This is part of the No Child Left Behind initiative, and every teacher must remain highly qualified in order to be in the classroom as a lead teacher.

Most teachers have multiple degrees, and multiple certifications. The newest initiative is requiring all mainstream teachers to be highly qualified for special education. The requirements would be then be a four year degree, an additional year for demonstration teaching, then an additional year per endorsement. This is aside from a Masters degree, or any other type of testing or graduate work. In all, teachers will have approximately eight years worth of education in order to be qualified for their position, and all is necessary in order to remain in the position. The requirements are so rigorous that many candidates find themselves leaving the teaching field because of the stress and amount of costs that they must pay in order to maintain their credential status. These requirements are very involved because America’s future workforce is dependent on quality education in order to help our country remain progressive. As of now America is falling behind in Math and Science, and so Federal requirements for teachers being competent in these areas of study is imperative. It also means that current teachers will be required to return to school in order to update their Math and Science skills.

Employment markets have set requirements that are specialized for the needs of their particular markets. For many of these companies, they need math and science driven people that can help them capitalize on the technology market in today’s world. Unfortunately, Americans are at one of the lowest marks for producing math and science majors for technological advancement. If you are considering returning to school, or majoring in a high demand field, math and science should be at the top of your list. These two aspects are some of the most sought after in the work force marketplace today.

Some of the areas that these jobs are in high demand with are in the medical field. This would involve finding new and modern medicines, or even cancer research. This would involve biology and chemistry. The math field would be involved with architecture, and possibly even military work with find out the physics for weapons use. The fields also are used in forensics and police work, as well as CIA, and FBI. Software companies are also in the market for math and science as these fields provide basic essentials in developing software for textbooks, new programs, and even ways to analyze scientific data.

In order to qualify for these fields, people must be willing to investigate their options in education. This means that obtaining a degree in mathematics or science will take time and research. Most universities and even online colleges offer programs in these areas, and based on the current need for people with these skills, there is not time like the present to investigate your options. There are many grants and scholarships that are awarded to people who choose these fields, and all can be looked up online.

You’re chugging along in school, studying, acing your finals, and turning in research papers. You take out student loans to help pay the cost of your education. Graduation will soon be here. Ah, a light at the end of the education tunnel.

But wait! There’s a ghastly beast in that light: student loans. Students defaulting on loans are up seven percent. Bad things happen when you default on your student loan. The lender could garnish up to 15 percent of your wages. (Not good.) The lender can take back your tax refunds. (More bad.) They can keep you from getting work in the future or getting a professional license. (Real bad!)

How can you slay the student loan beast and live happily ever after?

First, while you are in school, get a job. Working part-time will give you money in your pocket to cover the cost of your education instead of adding to the amount of your loan. Use that money wisely.

Second, if you must take out a loan, borrow only what you need. While it may be tempting to get extra money to pay for a special trip during spring break or to get new clothes, don’t do it! You’ll be paying lots of interest on that loan. Keep the loan as small as possible.

Third, start your job search before you graduate. If at all possible, line up employment before you walk through commencement. That way, you’ll have a ready source of income to apply toward your student loans.

And last, if you have already graduated, consider using a debt consolidation service. Loan consolidation is easier than you think. Instead of having payments going out to several lending institutions, you will have one monthly payment, which could cut your monthly payment up to 50 percent. And, your interest rate will be lower. Now that’s a significant savings!

The decision to return to college as an adult is one that is to not be taken lightly. For most, by the time the decision has been made, there is some sort of a career or family that is established, which can make completing school work difficult. Those that decide to return to school however, are in search of a better career, looking for a promotion, or simply want to have a college degree. This is the case of many as they have found that their dreams of attending college could not be fulfilled when they were younger. The technological advancements and awareness of adult learners has created a new type of educational system for college that is very accommodating for the older learner. This means that there are classes that are held online, at night, or via correspondence. The traditional brick and mortar colleges are fading for this group of learners, as they simply cannot be flexible enough for the older learner to maintain their current responsibilities while completing school.

One of the nice aspects for attending school at night includes the fact that many universities are creating satellite campuses. They rent a part of a strip mall, or church, or school, and are able to provide adjunct professors to come in and instruct. While the student may not be traveling to the main campus, their degree will say that they graduated from that particular institution. Two decades ago degrees would state that they were adult school, night school, or awarded from a distance learning institution. Today the degrees simply state the name of the school, and older learners can be proud to show off their diploma.

The online university system has become quite the way to learn in the 21st century. In fact, many of the schools have the same type of accreditation, which means the education received online is as good as the education received from live campuses. For many, this is the way to go, as they can completely dictate their learning schedule, save time and money, and still complete their goals of obtaining a degree.

Sending a child off to college can be filled with a number of worries. For many parents the very thought of their child being on his or her own can cause a number of worry-provoking thoughts, which is of course quite normal. However, what should you do if you notice that your child may have an addiction—if these are not just “normal” worries but justified in some way?

No addiction is normal. While most people would become worried if their child started using illegal drugs—and thus building a more normal and extremely dangerous type of addiction—other addictions might be ignored. While your child may enjoy playing video games or spending an inordinate amount of time on the computer, sometimes these can become addictive in behavior.

In regards to higher education, college can exist as a healthy way to find and develop increased independence. However, if any type of real addiction is present, this is a recipe for a number of negative results. Some individuals have a difficult time in such a situation if they do not receive help for their addictive behaviors. The addiction can be amplified and the individual could lose control in this new type of setting. How do you know the difference between a healthy love of an object (such as a video game or computer use) and addictive behavior? While there are no definitive and overarching rules, it may be a good idea to consult with a mental health professional. If a true addiction is present, your child can receive the help that he or she needs.

Help is available if warranted in your child’s situation. Resources such as MichaelsHouse.com may be appropriate for individuals with drug or alcohol dependencies, while other addictions can receive attention from professionals as well. Take a look at your child’s situation to determine how well he or she is prepared for this next important step in life.

Many adults are returning to school so that they can have better work opportunities. There was a study done a few years ago that looked at the amount of returning adults, the demographic that was returning, and how many were attending day classes, evening classes, and how many completed their programs. The results were somewhat surprising, but not completely unexpected. Women made up the majority of returning students. They also made up the brunt of adults returning to school during the day, and also of those that completed their programs of study. They also were the largest group to continue on to graduate programs.

Men made up the majority of students that returned to school at night, and the majority of returning adults that were looking to gain their Masters degree. This is to be expected as many men are working during the day, and can only attend school in the evenings. With the influx of online programs, many people are finding the schooling is easier than ever to do, but many still prefer attending a classroom situation for their studies. This is in part because most of the men and women that are attending evening classes range from the 34-42 year old range, and simply are more comfortable in a brick and mortar setting than a virtual setting. In fact, many of the programs that are offered at night require technology classes, and many of the classes are web enhanced, which means that part of the class is conducted online regardless of the program of study.

Night classes can be demanding as well. There are still traditional assignments, papers to be written, and potential observations that need to be completed. The most demanding aspect for many adult learners is that attendance is vital. Students are not allowed to miss more than a certain amount of classes, or they are removed from the program. This can be challenge to many as they have jobs, and families, and sometimes those two aspects are not as flexible as one would like them to be.

The Internet has given just about everyone a new way of looking at the world as well as experiencing it. Through the vast networks of the Internet, our world is shrinking when it comes to performing tasks or communicating with someone halfway around the world.

We have many more opportunities available to us than we did even in the recent past. One of these is online education opportunities. Traditionally, when we thought of obtaining a degree from a university, we thought of the usual brick and mortar on-site educational institutions. These scenarios included a professor or instructor standing in front of a classroom providing knowledge through a series of lectures. Students often made their educational choices based on distance rather than a school that would provide a better experience for their chosen field of study, due to geographic factors.

Because of the Internet and the rising popularity and availability of online degree programs, students have many more choices. There are now numerous universities, colleges and other educational institutions offering online degree programs. Students can enter certificate programs, obtain a Business Administration degree or even a PhD. Depending on the school you can even obtain a GED or high school equivalency certificate in order to pursue higher studies.

The flexibility of these online programs allow students to study when their schedules allow it because many of these schools have very flexible scheduling and course offerings. This will allow the student to work and still go to class. This flexibility can also be worked into a family’s schedule as well.

Students will be able to learn at their own pace and because of the open communication of these schools, student success is likely to be higher. Students are no longer stuck in a large lecture hall, unable to ask questions. Online programs allow students to communicate with the instructor and other students via emails, teleconferencing and other means of communication.

During high school, you may have been disappointed in the lack of clubs and organizations available at your school. The fact of the matter is that high school clubs rely on funds and the volunteer work of faculty to help run them. The same is true for college, except that there are a lot more students. The more students there are, the more clubs can exist due to increased amounts of money to help run them.

College offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities to choose from. The larger the school, the more clubs will likely exist. Some may seem off the wall and not interest you at all. During your freshman orientation, you will likely come across representatives of some of these organizations for you to talk with you to learn more. Keep an open mind and try one or more out. Extracurricular activities are a great way to meet new people and expand your horizons. Plus, you will learn something but in a different venue than the dreaded classroom you are accustomed to.

There are some things to consider before joining a club or organization:

• Fees and dues. These are more likely associated with fraternities and sororities. Before joining a particular group, make sure that you are aware of any costs involved on your end. In some cases, you might have to contribute money occasionally. An example is a field trip for an environmental club.
• Time commitment. Is this a type of club that you can drop in on occasionally? Are there regular meetings members are required to attend? Does the activity conflict with your class, study, or work schedule?
• Interest level. It may be tempting to join a political group for the sake of meeting people and because it sounds cool. If you have no interest in politics whatsoever, you will not find the club very enjoyable. The situation can be more daunting if you hold opposite political views.

Distance learning is an ideal option if you live far from a college campus, are working full-time, have a family, or are just simply turned off by the idea of traditional schooling. Distance learning has its perks. Virtual classes can be watched at your leisure. You can save time by jumping ahead and doing homework during class and not be reprimanded for it. You can study whenever and however you like, whether it be during a trip or at home in your pajamas.

An education solely from virtual classes does have its downsides. In some ways, this can negatively affect your future career in the long-run. Here are some points to consider:

• Virtual classes may not be as tough as tradition bricks and mortar classes. Although this sounds great in the short-term, you may not end up learning as much from the class. Keep in mind that you need to learn and gain skills through your classes to help you out in your career, not to just simply pass classes to gain quick access to a diploma.
• Distance learning lacks personal interaction. Unless you will have a career of jobs in which you telecommute or work by yourself, this will not do you any good. Most jobs require skills in teamwork. This is why many traditional classes require group projects throughout the semester. A lack of people skills may make certain situations difficult in your job.
• You will not gain public speaking skills. Sure, you may not plan on being a broadcast journalist or a great orator, but students of all majors benefit from public speaking in some fashion.
• Some companies solely want employees from traditional bricks and mortar schools. There is a misconception that graduates from traditional schools are better educated than those who obtained their education virtually.

Students today have many choices of colleges. Traditional colleges are still the most popular because you take classes in person. Distance learning schools are also increasing in popularity due to their reduced costs and flexible class schedules. Most students in traditional schools are open to the idea of virtual classes, while some abhor them.

You might be caught off guard when you sign up for a particular class only to find that it is offered exclusively off campus through online venues. Do not let this alarm you, particularly if you are not a fan of distance learning. Most universities offer at least one virtual class. This does not likely indicate a new trend that the college is tapping into. The primary reason why large bricks and mortar colleges utilize virtual classes is to accommodate an increasing student body.

Universities are exclusive in student enrollment. Admissions officers want the college to grow but do not want to accept more students than the university can handle. In some cases, however, a particular program might gain popularity among existing students. There is a reason why there are a limited number of seats per class. But what happens when there are not enough classes in general to accommodate the students that need a particular class for their major?

This is where virtual classes play a role. In some instances, a professor will film his lectures for an on-campus class and then post them online for virtual classes. The University of Florida uses this method within its ever-growing and increasingly popular College of Business.

Some universities also offer a select number of degree programs for distance-learning students. This is to accommodate a growing number of prospective students without losing out on enrollment numbers for the college. Another example is the University of Florida’s Master’s program for business students.

English can be a degree of interest for a writer or a literary fan. This field of study has its core in the English language, from history to semantics. You will also learn writing structures and likely study the literary works of some of the greatest authors. Although the coursework can be interesting, some students are at a loss as to what type of good job they can get with an English degree after college. However, there are a plethora of career paths you can take when equipped with a degree in English:

• Writer. This is the most obvious job that an English degree can help you achieve. However, this is also a broad job, as there are many different types of writers. Do you want to be a journalist and write for a newspaper? Do you want to be a freelance writer and have the opportunity to travel at your leisure? Or do you want to focus on fiction writing and attempt writing a novel? You can also write press releases for a public relations firm.
• Editor. If you know the basics of writing well, then you are a good candidate for editing jobs.
• English teacher. This can be at a middle school or high school level. English majors do not generally work at the elementary level. Elementary school teachers are required to have degrees in elementary education.
• Researcher. As an English major, you are accustomed to analyzing and interpreting various works, much the same as a professional researcher.

Consider taking electives from other majors during the completion of your English major. This will give you more knowledge for career that an English degree might not provide alone. For example, if you want to be a high school English teacher, a public speaking course would benefit you immensely. Public speaking is generally not a required class within the English major.

Business degrees focus on management, accounting, economics, finance, marketing, communications, and administration as part of the coursework. These classes will greatly benefit any of these job titles. Some of the jobs, such as retail manager, do not require employees to have degrees at all. However, having a degree will help you secure a higher salary and improve your chances of rapid promotion.

There are also different kinds of business degrees. The most basic skills can be acquired through an Associate’s degree at a community college. You can gain an even broader education through a Bachelor’s degree from a university. Once you are out in the work field and have found your business niche, you may consider a Master’s degree somewhere down the line in your specialty. For example, if you get an accounting job after you graduate from a four year business program, you can get a Master’s degree in that field to increase your earning potential and expand your career path. If you know what niche to go for, you might consider getting your Master’s immediately after your Bachelor’s degree.

There are two types of Bachelor’s degrees: Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. The two encompass different types of majors. In some cases, a degree can fall into both types, depending on what labs and courses you take. One is not better than the other. The difference lies in the type of academic path you take.

Bachelor of Arts degrees focus on coursework in liberal studies. Liberal studies is a broad term for a variety of classes that include history, literature, philosophy, English, teaching, and foreign language. If you major in American history, elementary education, or Spanish, your diploma will likely state that it is a Bachelor of Arts.

Bachelor of Science degrees, on the other hand, require more courses in math as well as science labs. Nursing, business, accounting, ecology, finance, economics, and engineering are all examples of majors that fall into this category.

Some majors can be considered both an Arts and a Sciences major. Let’s take Communication for example. Communication is a broad major that focuses on communication philosophies and theories at its core. The major can also branch out into different areas of communication. Marketing, journalism, and public relations are all branches of the Communication track. Journalism and public relations usually fall into a Bachelor of Arts degree, because you take more liberal studies courses. Marketing can go both ways. Generally, you need to take more math courses for marketing. Marketing itself is usually a Bachelor of Science degree. However, if you take marketing as a track for a Communication major, you will likely receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.

The determination of whether a major is an Arts or Science degree path depends on the college’s choice of coursework related to the field of study. An employer may not care whether the degree is a Bachelor of Arts or Science at all. Take electives if you need more liberal studies or science classes.

Dorm rooms are one of the types of living quarters that are available when you attend school away from home. They are traditionally small and have a bad reputation for being dirty, noisy, and cramped. However, this is not the case for dorms at some colleges. While you are investigating academic programs at a particular school, be sure to check out the dorms during an on-campus visit to avoid any surprises later down the line.

Dorms are a great way to meet new people, especially as a freshman that is new to a college. Dorm living is also far less expensive than apartment living. Plus you do not need to worry about taking care of utilities or internet access on your own.

Older colleges tend to have small dormitories. These spaces are small, sometimes the size of the average household bedroom. To make matters worse, these tight spaces are often shared by two to three people. These types of dorms have several rooms in one hall and a bathroom, small kitchen, and living room for everyone to share.

However, dorm living is not the same at all schools. Some colleges are remodeling their dorms to shadow the dorms offered at newer universities. Some newer dorms are extremely spacious, mimicking that of a condominium. Florida Gulf Coast University, for example, has dorms with four separate bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and two bathrooms for four people.

If you want to live in the dorms, it is imperative that you apply for the space immediately upon acceptance into a school. There are not enough dorms for every student in attendance. Schools take into account that some students desire to live off-campus, especially as they progress within their degree programs. Most colleges have enough dormitory space for freshmen, though some students live their throughout all four years of college.

Choosing the right type of education has become an important part of pursuing a degree or certificate, and now you can choose between online courses or traditional campus courses when enrolling in school. There are benefits and drawbacks to each of these education types, and so it is up to you to decide which type is going to address your needs and match with your personality style in order for you to have the best possible learning experience imaginable.

Online degrees and degree programs do have benefits, especially for students that need to pursue a distance learning program. If you cannot attend on-campus classes due to location or scheduling conflicts, then an online degree program can benefit you. Many distance learning courses also offer the benefit of self-paced learning by making course materials available early and allowing you to complete the work at your own pace, but this is not always the case and every course and degree program is different.

On campus courses offer benefits as well, which you must consider. For example, online courses do not provide any face to face communication with the instructor, and so they are less personal in comparison to on campus courses. It can also be slower to get help with problems in online courses because you cannot simply raise your hand or ask for help from fellow students.

It is ultimately up to you to decide which type of education is going to meet your needs depending on what your personality is like and what your schedule is like as well. Make sure to explore different resources online to find out whether an online university or a traditional university is going to be ideal for you. You may also consider a hybrid education involving both on campus and online courses depending on what your university offers.

A Bachelor’s degree is a four-year academic program obtained from an accredited university. The most common reasons students embark on a degree program is to increase their earning potential. A Bachelor’s degree sets you up for access to certain careers that a person without a degree will not have a chance at. There are other less obvious advantages to a four-year degree program that will last throughout your life.

Professionals with a Bachelor’s degree earn more than those without degrees and those who have an Associate’s degree or career certification. In fact, it is estimated that if you have a four-year degree, you will make a million dollars more within your lifetime. Considering that the average cost of a college education is around $40,000 in total, this is a good investment.

Companies continually look for potential employees that are more educated. Although they will have to pay them higher salaries, the extra knowledge and experiences that the employees bring to the company are invaluable assets. When you start your job search, you will likely come across companies that only hire if you have a Bachelor’s degree. Some even require Master’s degrees.

College graduates also fare better socially. The four years’ experience will take you to different places and meet different groups of people you would not have otherwise met on your own. People that do not attend college tend to be more socially judgmental, only due to a lack of exposure to different groups of people.

Employers value college graduates because of other skills they inherit from school that transition to future jobs. For example, you likely learned excellent time management and multitasking skills during college from juggling around classes, study time, sports, jobs, and extracurricular activities. You may not know it at the time, but your hectic schedule will transition to skills you can use in your future career.

An Associate’s degree is a two-year program consisting of a mix of general education courses and some electives that focus on a certain career path. This degree is generally obtained from a community college or even online. You do not attend a four-year university and drop out after two years expecting an Associate’s degree. However, this type of degree can help admit you to a four-year college or even a specialized career.

The most common reason people obtain Associate’s degrees is to change careers. Typically, you do not have any type of degree and wish to make more money in a more specialized profession. Common jobs include paralegal aides, medical office personnel, and business secretaries. Entering a two-year degree program gives you the knowledge and skills necessary to step up your career. Plus, employers are more willing to pay higher salaries for employees that are better educated.

Attending a two-year college can also help you transition into a four-year university. Some students out fresh out of high school opt for community colleges because they are either unsure of how school will work out for them, or they are not sure what degree program they want to go for. Choosing a university can be difficult if do not have a general idea of what you would like to study. Community colleges are also less expensive than traditional four-year universities. Therefore, it makes sense financially to try out a two-year school before embarking on a Bachelor’s degree.

In some cases, high school students do not have the above-average GPAs and test scores required to gain first-year access to a competitive university. Community colleges help solve this dilemma, because they are easier to get into in terms of your academic profile. This does not mean, however, that the workload at a community college will necessarily be easier. Having an easy workload would not provide you with any advantages especially if you want to transfer to a four-year college.

Ivy League schools are top-rated colleges in the United States based on academic achievements, student success rates, and the profiles of students admitted to the universities. Ivy League schools are also given more government funding to conduct research projects with its students. Ivy League schools are difficult to get into. However, you do not have to be wealthy to attend these schools. The admissions offices look at your overall profile to see how you would fit in the school.

Ivy League schools are located in the Northeast. As of 2011, there are eight Ivy League colleges. These include Brown, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania. There are other universities that across the nation that are currently trying to achieve the elitism of these universities. Examples include Stanford and the University of Florida.

However, the term “Ivy League” is just a historic term that describes the uniqueness of the academic achievements of the students enrolled in the colleges. There are only eight such schools, so the odds of a student attending one are not great. This does not mean that Ivy League schools are necessarily the best of all colleges. Attending a college depends on your personal preference for a particular atmosphere as well as what you wish to study.

Harvard University is the oldest Ivy League School, founded before the American Revolution in 1636. Harvard is also one of the smallest of the Ivy League schools; therefore the enrollment is more competitive. The largest of the schools is the University of Pennsylvania. Overall, the acceptance rate of these schools falls between only 10 and 15 percent. They are smaller than other universities and have higher standards in terms of GPA and test scores. You must have an above average SAT score, usually somewhere around 2000 to even be considered.

It is a well-known fact that having a degree can lead you to higher-paying jobs. In some cases, you will make more with a degree doing the same job as someone without a degree. At the same time, employers benefit from having educated employees. They are more knowledgeable in their field and have the latest information on up and coming trends. Some potential students refrain from attending college after high school due to the costs involved. There are some instances in which a company or organization is willing to pay their employees to further their education.

The military is known for paying for college for service men and women. This is one of the reasons why some people join the military. The military is not the only employer that pays its employees for education. Other well-known companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Walt Disney offer educational incentives to some of their employees and interns.

Paid education is one of the things to consider when applying for jobs, but should not be the sole factor. What happens if you already have a Bachelor’s degree and you want to go to graduate school? Professional and service jobs are increasingly offering to pay employees for grad school tuition costs. Examples include teachers, police officers, and fire fighters.

The reimbursement of college costs is definitely an incentive of certain jobs. However, you should not pass up the opportunity to go to school just because you want your future job to pay for the costs of college. Although some companies offer tuition assistance, the majority of companies do not. A better case scenario is to get your Bachelor’s degree after high school if you have the opportunity to, and then to find a good job that can pay for higher education costs. Do not rely on a free ride for college.

There is much to college that parents want to be involved in. The least exciting aspect of your child going to college is coming up with the funds to help pay for it. There are some things you should understand about college fees before you frantically look for money in your savings or taking on another job. Paying for college is not easy, but planning ahead can help you and your student immensely.

College fees begin during the application process. Each application costs between $25 and $100. Your student also has to pay to take the ACT and SAT tests. Once your child is accepted into a college, you can get a better idea of the long-term costs. Each college charges tuition based on a credit hour. If your child is enrolling full-time, then she will take between 12 and 18 credit hours per semester. Your child will average between eight and 10 semesters of college in total, depending on the major.

Do not encourage your child to indulge in part-time studies for the sake of saving money. In fact, this will end up costing you both more money, as school time and the subsequent living expenses are spanned over a longer period of time.

Books are a cost that can fluctuate between semesters. The most costly books are medical ones. Expect the cost of books to be anywhere from $300 to $800 a semester. Encourage your student to purchase used ones, if available.

Before taking out a personal loan or taking on a second job, look for free money available for your student. Encourage him to check out scholarships. Also be sure that the two of you fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. This determines your child’s eligibility for grants and loan interest rate federal loans. This reduces money-relates stresses for you and your student.

A part-time job is a reasonable way for college students to make money, manage their time, and gain life experiences outside of the university realm. There are different types of jobs available that can accommodate student schedules. These include:

• Retail stores
• Movie theatres
• Grocery stores
• Secretarial work
• Spas and salons
• Data entry
• Restaurants

This is just a small list of the jobs available to college students. Companies increasingly look for part-time employees as a way to cut down on the amount of people they employ full-time. When you work full-time, you are given benefits such as vacation time, sick time, and health and dental coverage. Employers can cut these benefits by hiring more part-time employees. This is advantageous to students who do not desire to work full-time.

When looking for a part-time job, make sure to tell prospective employers up front that you are a student and that your class schedule may vary every semester. Most employers are accommodating, but they do not like surprises.

Also keep in mind that you may not be able to go home every holiday when you are employed. Retail stores, for example, are at their busiest during holidays. It is not reasonable for you to get every holiday off while everyone else at your job is expected to work.

An alternative is on-campus jobs. Since your campus will be closed during holidays, you will have these days off. However, campus jobs do not pay as well as jobs off campus. Certain jobs on or off campus can help you increase your skills in your field of study. Business majors can benefit from working in a store while science majors can possibly work on campus as lab assistants.

No matter what type of job you choose, ensure that it does not interfere with your coursework. A job can help you bring extra income, but your classes should be your primary focus.

College is undoubtedly one of the most expensive investments you will make. Aside from textbooks, tuition, and lab fees, you will have to pay for your basic living expenses while you attend school. Scholarships come in handy but most do not pay for all of your expenses. Stafford loans can also help, but students are often still short of money. Some students decide to work full-time in addition to their studies to make ends meet. While full-time work can help you out financially, it also has its drawbacks for students.

Full-time work brings you extra income as well as health benefits in come cases. The extra life experiences are also a plus. You will learn how to balance study time around your work schedule. Once you graduate school, potential employers may be impressed by your ambition to work so much while attending classes.

Working full-time is possible for college students. Employers in the service market, such as retail stores are often among the most accommodating for college student schedules. If you can only find a day job, most schools offer night and weekend classes.

Full-time employment also has its drawbacks. The greatest concern is its implications on schoolwork. You might be able to balance your work and class schedule, but do you really have enough free time to devote to studying and term papers? Do you have to give up clubs and extracurricular activities you enjoy? There is a concern that you might miss out on the whole “college experience” if you work too much.

You may have to drop classes to fulfill your work obligations. This in itself may cause a problem if you receive financial aid through scholarships and federal student loans. To receive certain forms of financial aid, you have to be a full-time student. You have to take 12 credit hours or more to be considered a full-time student. Weigh the risks and benefits before working and going to school full-time.

College is seen as a time where students party it up and drink between classes. Although this may be what some students are drawn to, this is a misconception of what the college experience is all about. The students that do party hard are likely to drop out within the first couple years of school, perhaps even the very first semester of college. If you are drawn to college for this type of lifestyle, then going to school may not be the right choice for you. If you are afraid of not fitting into such a lifestyle, don’t worry; the majority of students are there to learn and better themselves, not to party.

Starting college can be intimidating socially, especially if you are going to a school and leaving all of your high school friends behind. The experience is quite liberating, but can be scary. You may have grown up in one town only to move to a completely new state among a new set of people. The first thing to remember is that most of the students there are on the same boat as you. Very rarely do college students end up attending the same schools as their high school classmates.

One easy way to meet people is by living on campus. You will likely have one or more roommates and share a building with many other students. Colleges also offer various orientations and get-togethers specifically for freshmen. Also consider being a part of a club or special interest group. Here, you will likely find common ground with fellow students.

College is a time for self-exploring. Unlike high school, college students are not “cliquey”. Apart from sororities and fraternities, there is very little competition between groups of people in a college atmosphere. It is best to take advantage of these few years and explore as many things as possible. You will not likely have the time to do so again in the near future.

Distance learning is a way to obtain a degree or career certificate from home. Although technology has made distance learning easier and quicker, it is not a new concept. Prior to the widespread use of household computers and the internet, distance learning was conducted through the mail. You would mail in term papers and tests only to wait for a few weeks for the USPS to deliver the results back to you.

Today students embark on distance learning courses for a variety of reasons. First, you might have a full-time job and require attending classes at your own leisure. This is common in adults who have been in a field for sometime and are going to school for a new degree of furthering their education. Distance learning also accommodates students who cannot afford room and board while attending a university in-person. In some cases, you might attend a university that reaches full capacity in some classes. If a certain course is in high-demand, the college might offer a distance learning-style version of the course to accommodate students. This is common in the College of Business at the University of Florida, for example.

There are certain points to consider when you investigate distance learning options:

• Is this the most suitable type of education for your schedule? If you have the time and are close to a college, you might instead attend classes in person.
• Is the particular school accredited? Most schools will say up-front. If you are not sure, ask the admissions office directly.
• Does the school offer the exact programs you desire? Will the degree or certificate benefit your career?
• Do you have the self-discipline it takes to learn from home? Distance learning requires excellent time management skills and a willingness to complete work on your own.

Attending college is one of the greatest investments you will ever make. Making the grades and test scores during high school is only half the battle. A big factor is how to pay for your studies. Some students have a misconception that attending school part-time will save them money. There are a few things to understand about credit hours and financial aid before making this decision.

Each class you take is worth a certain number of credit hours, the average being three. A school charges you per credit hour and not by class. Taking a three credit class is cheaper than a four credit class. For state residents, a university will charge anywhere between $300 and $400 a credit hour.

Part-time college students take 9 credit hours or less per semester. This generally equates to three classes. Full-time students, in comparison, take 12 credit hours or more. Although an average of one class does not seem like much, it can make a great difference in terms of work load as well as tuition and textbook expenses.

Before you decide to enroll as a part-time student, you must be aware of the financial aid implications. Check the enrollment requirements in advance of any scholarships, grants, and federal student loan programs you are involved in. You will find that the majority require that students enroll in college full-time in order to receive funding. These services are designed to help serious students make it through school, not for those who are interested in taking on or two classes a semester at their leisure. So you can see why these requirements exist.

On the other hand, if you do not have any monetary aid offered to you, it is up to you to consider what workload would be most appropriate for you in terms of time and money.

After deciding on your degree of interest and checking out various universities, you may decide to attend a college that is within 30 miles of your home. If a nearby university is easy to drive or take a bus to, you might consider living at home as a method of reducing your overall student costs.

Living away from home can cost between $600 and $1,000 a month, considering costs such as rent, utilities, internet access and food. With your parents’ consent, you can offer to pay your share at home and reduce these costs significantly. Plus, you will likely have more time to get a job and save money while attending school.

However, there are a few downsides to living at home. You will not have the same “experiences” as a traditional college student and you might have a more difficult time socializing and meeting people. To stay in the loop, try joining a club or get a part-time job on campus. Also, living at home might not give you the independence you desire as a young adult. This is especially the case if you still have younger siblings living at home.

In some cases, students cannot afford to attend a college that is far away from home. Some families cannot afford the costs of college and some students are wary about taking out loans. If this was not a factor in choosing your school, you likely have the financial assistance or scholarships that help you attend college away from home.

If you still desire to attend a university away from home but cannot afford to live in the vicinity, ask an admissions counselor about long-distance classes. For example, the University of Florida offers online distance learning classes through their Business program. Get involved with online class discussions during your spare time to avoid the feeling of isolation that distance learning can often bring.

Aside from choosing which school to attend, you have another big decision concerning where you live. Some students have the luxury of living at home during school, granted that their college is close by. Most students attend school miles away from home, or perhaps even in another state or country. There are two choices you can make: either live on campus at a dorm or off campus in an apartment.

Dorms are ideal for Freshmen, as they are an effective way to meet people. Although you will likely meet other students during class, you will not have the opportunity to socialize. Dorms vary by size depending on the school. Typically, the older universities have smaller dorms that suit up to three people, with communal bathrooms along the halls. Some newer colleges offer condominium-style dorm rooms, where each resident has his own space and there is one to two bathrooms per four people.

Dorms are also the cheapest route. On average, you pay $400 or more a month for the dorm and it includes utilities like electricity and water. The downside is that dorms are often space restrictive and your schedule might conflict with your roommate’s.

After a year in the dorms, some students decide to live in an apartment off campus. Apartments are more expensive, as there is rent, utilities, cable and internet to be paid, and usually separately. However, if you have a roommate, the costs are split in half. You will still likely find that apartment-living is more expensive. Some first-year students opt for the additional cost of an apartment from their first year of college and beyond.

Apartments offer more privacy and are preferred by students that care more about studying than socializing. Be aware that escaping to an apartment does not guarantee that there won’t be a party somewhere in your building. Unlike being in a dorm, you do have the luxury of more space within an apartment.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that you can initially fill out prior to going to college. If you plan to start college in the fall, then you can submit a FAFSA as early as January of that year. The form asks for sources of income as well as dependency. Most of the information asked for on a FAFSA can be found on your IRS tax forms. In this case, you might consider filing the two at the same time. The FAFSA can be completed every year, as your income or your tax filing status is likely to change.

The FAFSA itself determines your eligibility for government loans and grants based on your income. Without filling out this form, you can lose out on free money or loans that carry low interest rates. If you are considered as a dependent, you will need your guardians’ income information as well.

Fill out the FAFSA even if you do not know which school you are attending yet. The form asks for schools so that the information can be transmitted to those specific colleges. Put down all of the colleges you have applied to or those which you still may apply to. Otherwise, you might be faced with the headache of filling out an additional form if you end up being accepted to another school that you did not list. Each school that receives the FAFSA information will look at your application and determine your eligibility for school-specific grants and scholarships. This could end up being one of your deciding factors when choosing between schools.

If you are not awarded any grants or scholarships based on the information submitted with your FAFSA, it can still help you secure student loans and comparable interest rates. This is often cheaper than getting a personal loan on your own through a local bank.

There are a variety of reasons why some college students decide to take on a job in addition to their studies. The most obvious is the need for spending money, be it for books, groceries or keg cups. However, there is another group of working students that instead enter the labor force to supplement their education with real hands-on experience. Many people from this group can be found in the medical industry like nursing and pharmacology.

But whatever the reason for working while going to school at the same time, they all share one common problem: time, or the lack thereof. First of all, students that choose to work have to balance their schedule between the two. They must decide whether to do either, or both, full-time or part-time. No matter what schedule they formulate, working students will undoubtedly be confronted with less time to study and engage in extra-curricular or leisurely activities. Thus, it is imperative to manage time wisely.

Foremost, working college students should always plan far in advance. Always be aware of deadlines, as well as holidays which might allow extra time to catch up or get ahead. Additionally, it’s smart to expect the unexpected. This means allowing for leeway in the case of a pop-up assignment or the need to work overtime.

It’s essential to be aware of one’s limits when loading up a schedule with both school and work. Trying to accomplish too much will only hurt in the long run. Instead, it’s better to keep a work load–both at a job and at school–that is comfortable and add to it gradually.

Another step for managing time is getting enough sleep, which college students are known to excel. While it seems like a rather absurd tip, it has been proven that people under a lack of sleep perform tasks much more poorly. Drowsiness can then make some tasks take longer to accomplish, putting an entire schedule behind.

If there is one general advantage of online courses over traditional classroom courses, it is convenience. The convenience of online courses become apparent in a variety of ways, from time management to control over how one learns the material. It is this advantage that has made online courses a standard in all major universities, as well as allowed some to prosper and provide legitimate degrees on them alone. So in what ways exactly are they more convenient?

Unlike courses that follow rigid schedules, those online allow an extensive mode of flexibility. Students don’t have to be in class at a certain time for lecture, instead they spend time familiarizing themselves with the material when it best suits them. Additionally, students can tackle assignments on their own time as well, never having to stress over in-class projects.

Because of this convenient flexibility, students can allocate time towards other matters like working. It is difficult for most students to fit a job in the confines of a class schedule. But with online courses, class time can be moved to any hours of the day. This opens the door to more kinds of jobs available as well.

Instead of attempting to take notes during a lecture by hand, online courses readily provide lecture materials for students to conveniently browse and consult at their leisure; an extremely helpful feature for studying for exams. This convenience can also lead students to save money by eliminating the need for certain school supplies like notebooks.

Online courses also provide the convenience to pursue additional curricular activities like an internship, fellowship or apprenticeship to supplement a student’s education. They can also tackle other endeavors that can help buffer a resume such as research and papers for publication in their respective field of study. And who can forget the convenience to enjoy the many fun and exciting activities offered by colleges from intramural sports, art exhibits, theater performances and musical concerts.

It’s a fact that thousands upon thousands of students will graduate college every single year. Another fact is that thousands of those graduates will either decide they don’t like what they do once they enter the workforce, or find out their degree gives them little options for work. These kinds of occupational changes of heart has made continuing education popular.

With continuing education, full-time workers have the opportunity to learn new skills in diverse fields from book editing to advertising. And they do it all without sacrificing their current source of income. Most continuing courses are designed with the working adult in mind, and take place during night hours or even on weekends. Each course in a field of study generally costs a few hundred dollars, or two or three thousand for a year. Many end with the presentation of a certificate upon completion, which looks great on a resume.

Most people are familiar with continuing education courses offered my small, technical colleges; many of which are advertised on late night television. But because of their increasing popularity, and growing interest in more diverse fields, many Top 25 colleges from the University of Chicago to Stanford have begun offering their own courses.

The greatest advantage of continuing education courses is most are taught by people that work in the course’s respective industry. For example, a creative writing course would be led by a published author or journalist. Meanwhile, people taking an advertising course would find themselves learning from an advertising executive. This is a perk for two reasons. One, students will garner inside knowledge about the industry they would like to enter instead of just basic principles, theories and skills. Additionally, the connected teachers present a very valuable networking opportunity.

Continuing education presents a viable alternative to going back to school full-time to get another degree. It is substantially cheaper, and students are given real-life experience not often found in traditional classrooms.

The way people are educated is an evolving process as educators search for the most effective ways to teach students. Blackboards, chalk and erasers have given way to computers in the classroom, and now, more students are taking courses in many places other than a classroom. Although distant learning has been around for generations, it is just now reaching its potential with the proliferation of new, cheaper technology. Whether on the Internet or through delivered DVDs, distant learning is becoming a staple for learning in elementary school and into college.

With all of this change, some traditionalists have come to wonder what exactly are the benefits. They believe the same education can’t be garnered as with a physical teacher. Or they bemoan the lack of a rigid school schedule.

The truth is that distant learning provides many benefits outside the classroom. First and foremost, the advent of distant learning has provided greater access to education than what can be offered by tradition schools. Students that live in rural or underprivileged areas can take classes on the subjects they are most interested in. For those same students it is also a more economical method of learning, not needing expensive textbooks or other materials.

There is also a cost advantage for educational institutions as well as the individual student. Instead of operating with full-time educators and using an extensive supply of materials, everything can be done online or with a few discs.

Distant learning creates a new demographic of learners, especially in adults who lack the time to dedicate to traditional courses. For universities, they have seen a bump in students and tuition as students from other college need to take a specific course but find it only at another university’s distant learning program.

Of course the students are to benefit greatly with distant learning when it comes to time and flexibility. Individuals can follow additional opportunities like a job or other educational pursuits.

Trying to decide between online colleges is much more different than trying to pick amongst traditional universities. Most students interested in an online college have a specific subject in mind, but don’t have the same statistics that are available for major universities to help compare programs. No need to fret though, as there are a few basic things to consider when choosing between online colleges that will provide just as an informed decision as deciding between any universities.

The first thing to be aware of is an online college’s accreditation. The status of this very important feature can be the deciding factor between getting a job or transferring credits to another school. Attending a school with regional accreditation will provide many more options.

Research each online college’s requirements. While online college means not having to attend daily classes in-person, some may still require to attend on-campus sessions. Remember, not all of them let students attain degrees solely online.

The most appealing feature of online colleges for a lot students is their flexible schedules. Most schools will allow students to work at their own pace, but others have unwavering deadlines or live lecture sessions at specific times. Decide which setting is best for you; whether you need more freedom or more structure.

Like all traditional universities, online colleges have course exams. But unlike those institutions, each online college may follow its own testing structure. Whereas some require students to complete exams in the flesh at a testing facility, others stay with the online educational parameters and allow students take all tests online as well. This can be a major concern if you live a great distance from the actual college.

Also in the mold of other colleges, online schools have admission proceedings. A few take whomever sends a check. Meanwhile, others try to hold a higher standard and require detailed application forms along with an essay, and will take high school performance into consideration.

It’s harder and harder to find a job that doesn’t require a college degree. This presents quite the dilemma for people already in the work force that decided to forgo college and start working right out of high school. At this point in their lives they have too many responsibilities to attend college full time which is why online courses are a viable alternative. Students get all of their materials online and have much more flexibility in their schedule. Accredited online programs offer all degrees–associates, bachelors, masters and yes, doctorates–that are recognized by any career recruiter. If you’re looking to join the working ranks, or looking for a career change, here are the top degrees to find online.

Business
Most online programs offer degrees in all fields of business. This includes finance, accounting, marketing, international banking and many more. Getting a business degree online is great for supplementing a degree you currently have and advancing your career, and can be achieved in 1 to 3 years time.

Engineering
The job market for engineering is hot and hasn’t shown any signs of cooling down. Believe it or not, students can learn the latest in engineering in every subject–mechanical, electrical, civil, aeronautic, etc.–and get a degree in this burgeoning field. The most popular programs in this field are masters degrees as people in science careers seek to further their expertise.

Teaching
Master programs in teaching are more prevalent online than bachelors, but can open the doors to all sectors of the education industry. In addition, most programs will request teaching hours right on campus but can be generally administered on a campus nearest to you.

Computer Science
Another industry with many job opportunities is computer science and information technology, many by Fortune 500 companies. Since the curriculum covers computer technology, what better way to learn than on a computer? Students can learn to write code, as well as design interactive networks.

There isn’t really a limit to how many credits you take in a semester; although if you keep adding them eventually you will run out of the number of hours in a day. Some students are like super machines and take upwards of over twenty credits in one semester, whereas some students go at a turtle’s pace and take the same number of credits over the entire school year. Selecting the right number of credits for you depends on a few factors that are different from student to student.

To decide how many credits to take, you should first decide on when you would like to graduate. That is, in how many years you would like to finish your degree. Generally, students attend college for four years, which means taking around 12 to 15 credits each semester depending on the requirements of your major. However, some students, usually those that already have a major chosen before they even step foot on campus, want to complete school sooner in around 3, or even, 2 years. This expedited path to graduation puts credit hours in the twenties. Lastly, there are those that might be undecided about a career path or choose to take school a little slower and go on to graduate in 5 or more years. Depending on possible financial aid requirements, these students tend to fluctuate each semester, taking as many as fifteen credits and as little as 8.

Even if you are going to school full time, you still have to take into consideration how much time you actually have for school. A lot of students need to work while in college. Others are involved in athletics or other extra-curricular activities. You don’t want to burn yourself out with a loaded school schedule and work schedule. Since every learns differently, it’s best to review how much time you need to dedicate to each class and place limits to how many you sign up for.

With tax season quickly approaching, it can be quite confusing getting your taxes done, especially if you have dependents. If you are doing your taxes yourself, you will need to file your taxes differently depending on how many dependents you have. Any child or other relative may be eligible to be claimed as a dependent on your taxes. However, if you are married, only one of you will be able to claim the dependents. If a dependent earns income as well, the amount that is tax exempt depends on how much income they make.

There are also other credits that you may be eligible for if you paid someone to take care of your child or relative that previous year. There are also incentives that you can use in order to apply to a college savings plan for your dependent. You can use a tax calculator to figure out the amount you can get back from dependents. Each family is different because there are many different factors that contribute to the amount that is deductible when a dependent is concerned. You can also receive a deduction for any medical insurance premiums you may have paid throughout the year. Out-of-pocket expenses also apply, but may be subject to a smaller deduction percentage.

You can use tax software or even visit an accountant in order to figure out your taxes. If you get stuck on any areas when doing them yourself, you might want to contact someone so that you get the most benefit from filing your taxes. An accountant or even software may find some extra money that you didn’t know you qualified for. When doing your taxes, just remember to take your time and don’t worry about everything at once. If you do one section at a time you will find that it is not so difficult once everything is completed.

Beginning as early as middle school students start judging what they learn in class and how it applies to the real world. Anyone that has had to sit through hours of algebra or calculus and went on to get a job in a profession that uses neither math or science certainly understands this sentiment. The same thinking continues in college classrooms as well. Every college has a set of required courses, especially for freshman that leave some to wonder about their purpose.

If the goal is to get a job out of college then why spend time learning about things that are irrelevant to your future industry? This question has created new educational programs, which many colleges are starting to offer, that teach more practical knowledge for specific subjects. These are generally known as professional courses.

Professional courses are usually geared towards attaining a master degree with employment as the final goal. Many working adults enter these education programs to expand their experience in their current profession or jump into something brand new. They are taught in a variety of fields from real estate to public relations to digital media.

One advantage of professional courses is that students don’t have to dedicate themselves to superfluous studies in unrelated material. Everything studied in the class is predicated on the real-life issues of that particular field or job profession. If you study business then you don’t learn Shakespeare.

Additionally, professional courses are taught by instructors that are also leaders in their field. Instead of learning from someone that just knows a lot about an industry, they learn from someone who is actually in that industry and doing well in it. Also, students in professional courses are commonly required to garner hands-on experience in their field of study. This can mean having a class in the actual work environment and taking part. Or it can mean taking an internship while going through the program.

The path after high school can go in a variety of directions. The education can continue in the halls of higher learning, or the five day 9 to 5 work week can start. For those that choose entering a place of higher education, the paths are also many. Most assume that higher education only means going to a college or university. That isn’t the case, however. There are many different institutions that offer education programs in a variety of fields. And it all depends on what the student is looking to do with their life.

For most high school graduates the next step is in the general type of higher education. This includes the major colleges and universities most people are familiar with. Here, they can learn just about anything. Each university offers programs in specific fields, and students can obtain each major degree–bachelor’s, masters and doctorate. Students receive a well-rounded education, but less job-specific details.

Creative students that want to pursue a career in the arts are better off going to an institution that specializes in their practice. These are the liberal arts schools of higher education. However, subjects can range from the very broad like history or literature to the very specific like dance school or fashion design. Not only do art students learn about their craft, they get to practice it much more than they would in other institutions.

In relation are other specifically designed schools that are geared towards one industry. These are known as vocational schools or training programs. Vocational higher education is about learning the particulars about a single profession, or at its broadest, a single industry. These programs are more for training students to do a job rather than educate them in theories. Vocational schools are offered in a plethora of fields. People can study everything from mechanics to information technology. In addition, they are directed to open job markets and networks during training.

Continuing education is for working adults. Thus, most students partaking in continuing education have received degrees in various fields and have even already had long careers in their profession. But like they say, there is always room for improvement, and continuing education provides a means to gather more experience and build better credentials for moving ahead in the work place.

But how do busy individuals find time for such educational improvement? On top of the full time job, there are usually children to take care of, or the needs of a spouse. Then there are the general adult responsibilities like managing a home. It would seem there is no time left to study. Yet, many adults take on the challenge by incorporating a few changes.

First of all, adults taking a continuing education program need to creatively rearrange their schedule. This means asking a spouse to take on some additional home duties, as well as cutting out other activities–be it nights out or playing cards with friends. It may also mean working with your employer to accommodate your schedule. While most continuing education courses are taught at night or on weekends, you may need additional days to study. A lot of employers encourage education and will make those arrangements, and some may even help pay for it all.

Second is finding the right program that will work for you. Most likely, there is a local college offer continuing education courses that would be easy to get to. But if you can’t make arrangements to attend those classes in person, then there is always online courses. Colleges across the country offer continuing education programs online.

Lastly, decide how soon you would like to finish a continuing education program. If you want to complete a program as soon as possible, then it will most likely mean a greater number of schedule changes. But, if you’re in no hurry, taking courses over a two-year span may be easier.

A growing debate on college campuses across the country is whether online courses are easier or harder than traditional courses taken in classrooms. Even though an online course and a traditional one can be on the exact same subject, students claim that there is a stark difference in difficulty. The reality is that generally the material is the same. What is different is how you learn it, which can be harder or easier depending on the student.

The most obvious difference between the two is the absence of an instructor. In a traditional setting, someone is in front of you physically going through the material, while in an online course the material is there but you have to go through it on your own. Some may find it harder to absorb information by themselves. However, online programs let you get in touch with instructors for any needed clarification.

And what about the actual material? In class, students usually have to scribble down notes as the material is discussed, then have to decipher what exactly they wrote down when studying. Meanwhile, notes for online courses are posted on a website and are very easy to retrieve and consult.

With the absence of classmates, there is also a difference between how some students then study. Instead of having the opportunity to meet your peers, online learners have to typically review the material on their own. While some students prefer studying alone, others thrive by working with others and working out problems as a team.

Lastly, there is the issue of schedules. One advantage of online courses is they allow for more flexibility since there is usually not a set class time. With that flexibility students can accomplish other responsibilities and then have more time to dedicate to their studies. However, other students would rather have a rigid schedule that keeps distractions from incurring on their studies.

In the end, it all just depends on who you ask.

Online courses were designed for any college student to take. However, the doesn’t mean every college student should take them. In fact, there are some specific instances for when a student needs to take them and some specific types of people that excel in such an educational environment. Since every student’s college journey is sure to be different and each one retains knowledge differently, it’s useful to understand the varying circumstances for when online courses are most suitable.

Every college has a certain selection of required courses that every student must take. The same goes for every major. Some of these courses are of no interest to some students, so they may not dedicate much thought on them. So if a student needs to take one class, especially because it is required, it may be in their best interest to take it online since they won’t have to dedicate actual class time in their schedule on the subject.

Another instance is when a specific course a student needs is completely full, or offered only at a time that conflicts with the rest of their schedule. In this case, a student can actually look for the course offered online from other institutions. This way the course doesn’t have to be made up in a whole separate semester. However, to be safe, students should make sure that such a course credit will be accepted at their current school.

While situations that require the need to sign up for an online course are pretty straight forward, the kinds of students that should take them are a little less obvious. Most students would consider themselves to be independent, but if you generally need a close study group or just like having direct help working through course material, then an online course might not be a good idea. Students that can work efficiently alone are the more ideal candidate for online courses.

The educational practice of distant learning is a very independent way to attain knowledge of a specific subject. In a nut shell, a person is given the materials, either sent to them in the mail or provided online, and is generally on their own taking in all of the lessons. For everyone that chooses to go this route in trying to learn a subject, they are sure to encounter the advantages and troubles of the program.

Starting with the pros, one will instantly see the expansive collection of material available to a distant learner. Not even college courses provide the same type of material–videos, interactive tutorials, etc.–that come in a distant learning program. And best of all, that material isn’t to be lost easily. Whereas college students are putting their notes in voluminous notebooks, distant learning is comprised of digital applications that are already neatly organized and easily accessible. With distant learning, students can learn on their own time and when they are ready versus on that of someone else.

As a half pro and half con, as briefly mentioned, distant learning is an independent affair. This can be detrimental to some learners who feed off of structure. For others, it is better and easier to retain if they have ultimate control on how they take in the subject material.

In distant learning programs there can be a limit on how far into a subject one can go. Some fields of study will necessitate physical interaction with the material. For example, no one can become an expert mechanic without actually seeing the inside of a car and touching the tools. There is also no discrimination in a distant learning program. That is, there is nothing that emphasizes what parts of a subject that are important and what are merely secondary. And if you get stuck in a part of the material, then finding the solutions are ultimately up to you.

While continuing education programs are generally open to all, institutions that offer them are more interested in specific types of students. The process of getting into a continuing education program is certainly not as rigorous as getting into a university, but there are still certain requirements that have to be met. And since most continuing education course sizes are relatively small, each school is only going to pick the best suitable. That means a veterinarian may have a much harder time getting into an engineering program than someone currently designing planes at Boeing.

This leads to the first, and most important, thing needed for a continuing education program: experience. It is true that continuing education is for people to start learning about a certain field to begin with, but schools still want to know that you have an actual interest in the work and are capable of performing it. Sure, every school wants your money, but they also want serious students and that is especially so for continuing education. Applicants need to emphasize any experience that is relative to the program, no matter how far fetched. For example, being a secretary and talking to outside callers can be a valuable example of public relations experience for a marketing program.

However, some continuing education programs are going to ask for evidence of your work. So for a creative writing course, applicants will be required to submit a piece of writing. While schools won’t necessarily be looking for a masterpiece, they will take applicants with the better submissions. Therefore, those interested in a continuing education program need to tackle some work in the field before getting even accepted. There are many ways to creatively do this, and can be a great way to supplement a lack of experience, as discussed above. Thus, this stage is very important for those looking to enter a completely new career. Showing a natural talent can be the key to getting accepted.

Once you get accepted into a college, you are pretty much accepted for life. What this means is that your ability to sign up for courses to complete a degree do not expire. Additionally, it means that there isn’t really a deadline for completing your education. This is why many students go at different paces, as some choose to attend college on a part-time basis. A part-time school schedule presents both advantages and disadvantages for each student.

One such advantage is the need for financial assistance, or lack thereof. Assuming that someone taking college courses part-time is working the other half of their schedule then there will actually be incoming money. Full-time students on the other hand generally lack any funds whatsoever, and then have to rely on financial aid, which has to be repaid with interest, or scholarships that usually take extra work to acquire. While it might be unrealistic for a part-time student to make enough to cover their tuition, they certainly won’t be struggling to survive on Ramen noodles as many full-time students do.

In a part-time schedule, there is obviously going to be a lighter work load. This saves most students the stress that comes with full-time schedules. It also allows part-time students more time to dedicate to each subject, possibly providing a better chance at then excelling in them.

Going to college part-time, however, will then take a little longer to complete. While this may not bother some, it can present problems in the future. A student may run into unforeseen problems like losing their job and delaying their studies even further. Or more importantly, in the time to finish a part-time college education, the economics of the world may cause a student’s major to become less valued and thus shrink the job market. In such an situation, the student would have to decide whether to then pursue another major or try to make it with what they have.

It goes without saying that it is never too early nor too late to learn something new. The real issue is whether someone has the opportunity to learn something new. With distant learning the answer is yes. Whereas in most educational programs the students must go to the information, in the case of a distant learning program the information comes to the student.

With that said, the geographic conundrum of most educational programs is eliminated. A distant learning program will provide the same subject material to a student in Indiana as it does to a student in Japan. In every continent the education will be equal.

Another thing eliminated with distant learning is age barriers. Most distant learning programs will be tailored to varying age groups. So if a 4-year-old and a 70-year-old both need to learn basic math, they will get the education they need but at rate that is suitable and specific for them.

What about students with varying degrees of interest? Since the pace of a distant learning program is up to the students themselves the same program works just as well for the most dedicated learner as it does for someone with only a passing interest. While the former will forge ahead, the latter will still receive the same education in the end.

The same can be said for one person who is trying to shore up their knowledge in a specific area compared to someone who is learning for the very first time. Distant learning programs are very popular as a reference tool for someone who already is familiarized with the material. Yet first-time learners will be able to study the material in much of the same fashion.

Similarly, distant learning programs can be used for students as a complimentary tool as much as they can be used as a primary source. The collection of information offered from distant learning programs are valuable in both cases.

Every career out there needs some kind of schooling or training. What kind, of course, will differ from job to job. Some careers can be reached at a slower pace or intermittently, no matter how many times a student goes on hiatus. Then there are those other careers that demand extensive learning in which a student nearly disappears until graduation. They are lost to long hours of studying as well as days acquiring hands-on experience. Below are three careers that need exactly that kind of full-time course schedule.

Medical
Job growth in the medical field is always strong for two reasons. One is because people are always going to get sick. Secondly, less applicants since careers in the medical industry generally require going to school for nearly a decade. Because of the severity of a career in medicine, there is much to be learned and much to be practiced. Which is why aspiring doctors don’t have the luxury of doing much else. There are some exceptions, of course. Many future nurses, for example, will work in hospitals as aids, while going to school part-time.

Engineering
There are many particulars in the subjects of math and science. Unfortunately, it can be very easy to forget a lot of them. To keep the mind fresh in both is why studying engineering is best done on a full-time course schedule. In addition, the engineering field is constantly advancing, so taking time off means falling behind and having that much more to learn.

Law
One would be hard pressed to find another field of study that requires more reading than law. Students must comb hundreds of law cases as well as documents detailing each aspect of every law relative to a student’s chosen specialty. Because of the large work load, most law programs make students sign waivers agreeing to do nothing but study law. And if that isn’t enough, law students have to find time to prepare for the bar exam.

Typically college students use the summer for three things: a relaxing break from studying and time traveling; time learning an industry as an intern; and days working to save money for the next college year. For those less burned out from nine months of study sessions and exams, the summer presents itself as the perfect opportunity to get ahead in school. In the summer it isn’t expected, nor are they really offered, to take full-time courses. This allows students to continue their education in a few different ways.

During the summer, students can take a few courses all on a part-time basis. Surprisingly there are two summer sessions, offering accelerated courses during each. Taking courses during the summer usually doesn’t reach the double-digit credit hours during the regular school year. So, students can set aside a lot of time for work as well as leisure activities, including trips.

However, some students have had enough of campus completely. This doesn’t mean they can’t still put a few more credits under their belt. The summer is a great time for students to explore an online course. What better way to study then on a beach with a laptop? Online courses also present the same flexibility of taking part-time courses. In fact, they offer even more since being in class isn’t required.

In relation, students in the summer can easily be accommodated with programs in distant learning. Maybe they are spending the whole summer abroad. Well, courses can still be completed over seas. Or better yet, students have the possibility of signing up for a class at colleges in their host country. Distant learning is also an ideal option for the student not yet ready to immerse themselves in studying over the summer. For those that do, it is also an ideal options in case they run into the issue of a course offered over the summer filling up since most class sizes are significantly smaller.
